What is the School Choice Parent Program?
School Choice also works to make sure parents become active participants in their child’s education. We believe that the long term success of a child depends on responsibility first taking place in the home. For this reason, in 2003 we instituted a Parent Component to our program and since 2003 this program has only grown. The response by parents has been nothing short of amazing.
Every month, we offer two meetings a month at different locations and times on a different topic that help low-income parents, grandparents and guardians learn the necessary skills to better equip them to meet the growing demand of today’s society. Topics for this year have includes: How to Help your Child Succeed in School, Budgeting in Today’s Tight Economy, Your Health-Its One of Your Family’s Best Friends, Summer is Almost Here- Quality Programs for Your Child, Its Terrible Twos All Over Again- Life With Your Teenager and How to Relate, Safety- Your Life Can Depend On It and our Four Points of Balance Parent Workshops. We have partnered with community organizations to ensure that these meetings are an effective delivery method. These partners have been able to speak at our Parent Meetings on their master subject levels, all at no cost to School Choice. Community Partners have included the Health Department, the Fire Department, a financial planner that specializes in working with low-income families through civic organizations and the Deputy Director of Metro Safe.
This program is mandatory for all participants in the School Choice program. Scholarships will not be paid unless parents and guardians have met their required meetings as outlined in their School Choice Scholarship Agreement. Families are required to attend 5 meetings but most parents attend many more.
