What is the School Choice Family Program?
School Choice also works to make sure parents, grandparents, and guardians become active participants in their child’s education. We believe that the long term success of a child depends on responsibility first taking place in the home. In 2003, for this reason we instituted a Family Component to our program and this part of our program has only grown each month. The response by families has been nothing short of amazing.
Every month, we offer two meetings a month at different locations and times on a different topic that help low-income parents, grandparents and guardians learn the necessary skills to better equip them to meet the growing demand of today’s society. Topics for this coming school year will include:
- How to Help your Child Succeed in School
- Where to go & What do for High School & College
- Budgeting in Today’s Tight Economy
- Everyday School Challenges, including Bullying
- Speak Up & Be Heard, How to Advocate Effectively for Your Child at School
- Your Health - Its One of Your Family’s Best Friends
- Summer is Almost Here - Quality Programs for Your Child
- Family Communication
- Safety - Your Life Can Depend On It
We have partner with community organizations to ensure that these meetings are an effective delivery method. These partners speak at our Family Meetings on their master subject levels, all at no cost to School Choice. Community Partners have included the Health Department, the Fire Department, a financial planner that specializes in working with low-income families through civic organizations and the Deputy Director of Metro Safe.
This program is mandatory for all participants in the School Choice program. Scholarships will not be paid unless parents, grandparents, or guardians attend their required meetings as outlined in their School Choice Scholarship Agreement. Families are required to attend 4 meetings; most attend many more.
